Project Overview

After a year of learning Hindi with my Hindi language professor, we worked one-on-one to create a Hindi script e-learning platform. The platform aimed to teach non-native speakers the Hindi (Devanagri) script through an lingusitc teaching technique called word-object association. My role included UX and UI design, as well as assistance in the creation of exercises and instructional material as per Penn State accessibility standards.

Research and Discovery

Our goal was to teach the Hindi script to non-native speakers in an approachable way. Therefore, my Hindi professor and I conducted interviews on current Hindi students at our university to find our what would help students learn Hindi faster and more thoroughly. Through the interviews and the secondary research performed by Professor Jayakar, we realized that we had to create exercises that were sequential and approachable to our target users of non-native Hindi learners. In summary, the platform had to be easy to use, accessible, feature incremental learning, and utilize word-object association effectively.

Ideation and Planning

During planning, we referenced other existing Hindi script educational material like physical flashcards. We decided that the script should be divide the alphabet into 6 sets strategically containing letters in an order that would be easiest to digest. For each letter, I created a design of an object that links the object to the letter through word-object association. Finally, there would be exercises that tested sound, memory, vowel usage, and more.

Design and Development

Multiple iterations of the script and object designs were made to ensure consistency. Throughout the design process, exercises including the designs that feature word-object association were tested on non-native speakers by myself and my professor. Though the project is still in development, our tests have indicated that the program has quickened the learning of the Hindi script for non-native speakers. The platform is planned to be tested on incoming Hindi students for the Fall'25 semester.

Reflection and Learning

Through working solely with my professor on this project, I learned important attributes of user-friendly assets that are used for educational purposes. I greatly enjoyed seeing my designs have a direct impact on language learning, which is one of my passions.
